It's not looking good for the Provincial Liberals as we head into an election year. MPP for Barrie, Aileen Carroll announced yesterday that she will not be seeking re-election in the October Provincial Election.
She won the 2007 election by a very slim margin, and gave the Provincial Liberals a foothold into Simcoe County, which we all know is Conservative country. Carroll joins a long list of sitting Liberal MPP's who have decided not to run in the 2011 election.
During her short time on council, she chaired the 1996 capital campaign, which saw the construction of the “new” Barrie library, which brought the library services under one roof.
Her Friday-morning announcement ends speculation that she would retire, after having served not only as a city councillor, an MPP and MP – including posts in both the federal and provincial cabinets.
In 1997, she sought the federal Liberal nomination and won handily – a victory that made her the first federal Liberal elected in Barrie since the Second World War.
In her time in Ottawa, she became Barrie’s first and only federal cabinet minister. She served as Minister of International Cooperation under Prime Minister Paul Martin, a job that had her responsible for the CIDA, the Canadian International Development Agency.
During her term as MPP, she helped obtain funding for Hospice Simcoe, additional funding for commuter train service, $20 million for Georgian College’s new health and wellness centre, $4.3 million for new Fire Station 1, and $4.6 million for a Lake Simcoe Regional Airport expansion.
Again things are not looking good for local liberals in Simcoe county, and uncle Dalton should be shaking in his boots.
Until next time!
