Local Liberals seek new candidate.

Simcoe-Grey Liberals now join a list that includes the local Greens and Conservatives in seeking a new candidate for what will most likely be a spring election in Canada.

Andrea Matrosovs, the Liberal candidate since April 2007 has called it quits. In the 2008 Federal election Ms. Matrosovs came in 2nd to Helena Guergis the former Conservative junior cabinet Minister who was booted out of the Conservative party several months ago.

With Helena Guergis sitting as an independant MP, and with 3 candidates who have already come forward to seek the position of Conservative candidate, the local Liberals had a bit of hope come the next election in actually winning the riding. The Liberals did hold the riding for several years when the vote on the right was split, and with what will be another split as Helena Guergis has said she will run as an independant Conservative, the Liberals with Ms. Matrosovs as their candidate must have been excited about actually winning the riding.

Now with the Liberals seeking a new candidate, and the Green Party in the same boat as their candidate, Stuart Starbuck decided to step down to run for a seat during the municipal election, what does the future hold in our riding? I know Ms. Matrosovs having been a former Liberal, and a former member of the executive in Simcoe Grey, she's very well spoken and knows the issues inside and out.
She's a hard worker and if Dion was not the leader of the Liberals during the last election the results would have been better for Ms. Matrosovs.

Cyberspace was abuzz when the news broke that she had resigned. Speculation was that she was asked to step aside because the Liberals wanted to bring in a star candidate who could win this riding in the next election. Needless to say if that was true then they should have brought in a star candidate in the Vaughan by-election to cream Fatino. Vaughan was a riding held by the Liberals for the past 22 years until last month. In her statement Ms. Matrosovs stated that she wanted to spend more time with her family and her husband who lives out in P.E.I. for his job, and I believe her.

So with the Greens, Liberals, and Conservatives most likely holding nomination meetings in early 2011, the faces around the debate table will most likely be all different, except for maybe the NDP as I think Katy Austin might take another kick at the can when an election is called in 2011.
