The First Rogers Debate..A big yawn!

Well I had my popcorn ready, and a nice cold drink by my side as I was all excited to watch 6 of the 7 candidates duke it out on the first televised debate on RogersTV. Well it's one hour of my life I will never get back.

The "debate" started with each of the candidates giving a 1 minute statement about themselves. Having been in front of the camera during my days running for office, I can tell you that 1 minute is nothing. How can any candidate describe themselves and their party's platform in 1 minute. Anyway I still salute anyone who takes the time and run for public office.

I was hoping for the 2 Conservative candidates go take a shot at one another, and while they did take minor pot shots it was quite boring. Katy Austin the NDP candidate at the begining liked to correct Alex Smardenka, the Liberal candidate about the whole putting families first, which is an idea that the NDP has been trying to do for years. As a matter of fact Austin kept trying to correct both Guergis and Leitch as well when they spoke.

They were accepting calls and they were all directed towards the 2 Conservative candidates, but they asked each candidate to give a response. The Green candidate made a statement that he works 60-70 hours a week at his job and does not have much time left to campaign, and he even said that during the municipal election he told voters that he would not run in the Federal election. So Jace what made you change your mind? I was a bit concered with the performance of the Liberal candidate, Alex Smardenka. At the start of the show as he did not blink when making his opening statement. However I know this is his first time running for office, and I know when I ran for office back in 2007 it was really hard at first, but I did get better, and Smardenka did get better as the show went on.

I found Leitch well informed on the issues and towing the party line at every chance she got, but she was not a very exciting public speaker. She came across as very boring. I will give credit where credit is due and Guergis came across as well spoken and knowing the issues quite well.

So my rating of the whole show is a big yawn, and a word to the people at Rogers. When you have 6 candidates you might want to make the show 2 hours in length and not 1 hour, which is really not an hour as they have a bunch of public service commercials.

Until next time!

  1. Ms Leitch mentioned her clinic she runs every 12 weeks in the riding. Orillia is not in Simcoe Grey. We need someone who knows that, Someone from here. I can not vote for a parachute candidate. She should have ran in Toronto. And for her to say she will be a full time MP and keep her practice is silly. She can only do one or the other. This is a rich Toronto kid who thinks her family can buy her into a safe Conservative seat. Well my vote is not for sale. I will be voting for a Simcoe Grey resident thank you.

  2. If you had of listened a bit more closely, you would have heard Jace say he decided to run because the Green Party was a "natural fit", becasue of their stance on electoral reform. No wonder people are so turned off politics. Give the guy the respect he deserves. 22 and such a smart individual. Im not a Green supporter, but I will get behind someone like that. Jace you got my vote!

  3. Hmm, when someone makes a statement during the municipal election saying he would not run in the Federal election, one would think he would keep his word, and not pull a Wilson and flip flop. Yes he's 22, and yes he's a smart kid, but he's playing with the grown ups now. Also in your post you said your not a Green Supporter, but "Jace you got my vote". So please don't tell me your also pulling a Wilson.

  4. He didnt say, he wouldnt run though? I think. Pretty sure. He said he would not join a political party. Its ok to "flip-flop", people change. And I would vote for him cause he seems the most sincere. Thanks for your time, I am not here to turn this into one of those blogs. lol :)
